About the ABPI

The ABPI exists to make the UK the best place in the world to research, develop and access medicines and vaccines to improve patient care.

We represent companies of all sizes which invest in making and discovering medicines and vaccines to enhance and save the lives of millions of people around the world.

In England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, we work in partnership with governments and the NHS so that patients can get new treatments faster and the NHS can plan how much it spends on medicines. Every day, our members partner with healthcare professionals, academics and patient organisations to find new solutions to unmet health needs.

Our Common Goal

The pharmaceutical industry, researchers and healthcare professionals share a common goal: to develop and make best use of treatments that improve people’s lives by preventing and curing disease.

We want to raise awareness of what more needs to be done to tackle poor health outcomes and unmet health needs.

Our industry is a core part of the health and research ecosystem in every country in the world.

Here in the UK, pharmaceutical companies partner with universities and the NHS on clinical trials and research projects to accelerate the development of new treatments and ensure they meet the needs of patients.

Follow us on Twitter, LinkedIn and Instagram as we keep working to make the UK the home of innovative medicines and vaccines.

UK medicine spend

The UK spends less on medicines than other European countries, which means UK patients don’t always get the widest range of treatments available.

Industry clinical research

The number of participants recruited into UK industry interventional clinical trials fell by 13.8 per cent between 2022/23 and 2023/24.

Access to medicines

The UK can be slower than other European countries at getting approved medicines to patients, which means people here sometimes wait longer for new treatments.
